RSVPs encouraged for October 2 salon to Barbara Hogue: bhogue@christchurchphila.org
Description:
2 = 1, a site-specific work in tape, is the latest installment in Jay Walker’s Theotokos series. The cloaked figure central to the series, the Theotokos or “God Bearer,” lends a prevailing sense of mystery to Walker's consideration of symbolism and the openness of symbol-making. At the same time, tape offers a closed or limited number of formal options and, as the series evolves, an opportunity for Walker to explore and react to its boundaries as a medium.
October 2 opening/salon event, including a performance by Angela Sheik, 5:00-8:00pm. The installation will then be on view October 3-16, 10:00am-5:00pm, and is a stop on the 2015 Philadelphia Open Studio Tours POST East weekend, October 3-4. (Exhibition hall will be closed to the public on Sunday, October 11.)
Celebrate the spirit of Elizabeth Graeme Fergusson, an 18th century member of Christ Church and the host of America's first literary salons. Coinciding with Old City's First Fridays, salons with local visual artists, writers, and musicians will be held in the Great Hall of the Neighborhood House throughout the fall.
