Description:

Photographer Matthew Christopher, best known for his publication and website Abandoned America, presents photographs documenting the ruins of one of the greatest civilizations the world has ever known: our own. Originally intended as an examination of the rise and fall of the state hospital system, Christopher’s decade-long project grew to encompass derelict factories and industrial sites, schools, churches, power plants, hospitals, prisons, military installations, hotels, resorts, homes, and more.

For the December 4 opening/salon event, Christopher will be joined by Nathaniel Popkin (Lion and Leopard, Hidden City Philadelphia) and Jayne Thompson (Letters to My Younger Self), who will discuss finding and framing fiction/nonfiction in similarly abandoned settings.

Opening: December 4, 5:00-8:00pm, with the salon event 6:15-7:00pm. Christopher's photographs will remain on view December 5-18, 10:00am-5:00pm. (Exhibition hall will be closed to the public on Sunday, December 13.)

Celebrate the spirit of Elizabeth Graeme Fergusson, an 18th century member of Christ Church and the host of America's first literary salons. Coinciding with Old City's First Fridays, salons with local visual artists, writers, and musicians will be held in the Great Hall of the Neighborhood House throughout the fall.
